The 360 Tour , offered exclusively by the Vivencial Fishing boats, including our own Leodan, offers an unparalleled mix of wonder, and adventure, as it circumnavigates San Cristobal Island, visiting several exceptional visit sites.
The 360 starts around 7:30 and finishes at 4:15 to 4:30.
The 360 operates either “clockwise”, as shown above, or “counterclockwise”, starting at Rosa Blanca.
The 360 includes refreshments, snacks, lunch, snorkel gear, towels, wetsuits (sometimes extra), and a bilingual Naturalist Guide.
The 360 features “wet landings” where you step down into thigh-high water and wade to shore. While flip-flops are OK for the beaches, a short hike over lava rocks does call for closed sandals or walking shoes. Waterproof sandals are ideal.
In San Cristobal, prevailing winds blow from the southeast. While the northwest shoreline is in the shelter of the winds, seas off the exposed southeast shore can get quite rough, particularly during the windiest months of July through November. Some 360 tours may even turn back and omit the stop at Rosa Blanca.
Kicker Rock (known locally as Léon Dormido) is the most popular visit site in San Cristobal, renowned for its spectacular scenery, and wildlife. At one time, it was on the schedule of every cruiser and liveaboard dive-boat, but now, for its preservation, access is now restricted to Vivencial Fishing and Daily Tour boats operating from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
Vivencial Fishing boats make the crossing to Kicker Rock in a half hour or less and give you around 45 minutes to snorkel through the gap and around the perimeter.
There is always something to see at Kicker Rock: turtles, reef fish, rays, and sharks. Kicker Rock is famous for hammerhead sharks which can cluster in the dozens.
Water visibility is variable and can change within hours. Likewise, the currents and swell which make it an occasional challenge for non-swimmers. But even for someone that doesn’t get in, the scenery alone is worth the ticket.
Kicker Rock is the remnant of a “tuff cone”, formed by compaction of volcanic ash into a relatively soft rock, which was then eroded by the action of the sea. It is one of several famous examples found in the Galapagos Islands.
Cerro Brujo (Witch Hill) is an eroded “tuff cone”, formed by compaction of volcanic ash into a relatively soft rock, which was then eroded by the action of the sea (like Kicker Rock).
The 360 Tour takes you along eroded seaward face for several photogenic views including the eroded slot featuring “Darwin’s pants”, and the famous view of Kicker Rock through the tunnel of the “Witches Cave”.
Bahia Sardina is a beautiful sweeping white sand beach where you can stroll, swim or snorkel with sea turtles, rays and sea lions, or simply lie back in the sun.
Punta Pitt , at the northern tip of San Cristóbal, is the only location in Galápagos where you can see all three species of Booby: Nazcar, Red Footed, and Blue Footed, as well as Frigate birds, nesting in the same area.
The 360 boats pause in the sheltered bay to observe the birds nesting on the rocks and cliff faces which overlook the bay.
This also marks a convenient and comfortable venue for lunch, at the half-way mark of the 360 tour.
The waters around Punta Pitt are a productive area for inshore fishing. In keeping with the Vivencial Fishing mandate to educate visitors in the heritage of Galapagos fishermen and particularly their connection to the sea, we will drop a couple of lures, for around half an hour, in the hopes of landing a tasty, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, or even grouper.
Rosa Blanca is the only site on the southeast shore of San Cristobal, but absolutely worth the stop. Besides enjoying great scenery, you can snorkel with sharks, rays, various fish and sea lions.
Near the landing is a gorgeous white coral-sand beach.
A short trek over lava takes you to a unique tidal pool where you can often see sharks and turtles swimming in circles waiting for the next high tide.
Just beyond the pool, you step into a sheltered lagoon to snorkel, close up, with turtles and white tip sharks.
